A deer bends toward flowing water, its antlers curving around the Hebrew words “כאיל תערג על אפיקי מים” — “As a deer longs for streams of water.” The verse gives this tallit its name and captures the feeling at the heart of its design: the soul’s longing to draw closer to God.

Every element of the artwork on the back, from the sweep of the antlers to the curves of the water and the Hebrew lettering, is embroidered. The four-color design brings together shades of blue and silver in a piece that takes many hours of careful work to complete. Handcrafted in Israel, the tallit is made from wool with a non-slip weave that helps it rest securely on the shoulders. Stripes in navy, blue, sky blue and silver carry the colors of the embroidery through the fabric.

To complete the design, you can add a matching embroidered atarah bearing the words “צמאה לך נפשי כמה לך בשרי” — “My soul thirsts for You, my flesh longs for You.” The words at the neckline echo the longing expressed in the artwork on the back, bringing the two verses together each time you wrap yourself in the tallit.
